About the Course
In this course, learners will apply the Satir Model to improve interpersonal skills and build on better relationships with people. Learners will get to identify the Coping Stances and its effects; apply the Iceberg Model to discover self and others, and then manage expectations; combat repeated negative and unhealthy patterns of feelings, thoughts and behaviours; and resolve differences. The application of congruence interactions helps to enhance communication and interactions with family, people at work and others.
The course is targeted at workers who work with people. It caters to new entrants to social work, social workers, psychologists, counsellors, para-counsellors or lay counsellors, volunteers and community workers in social service sector. It also targets HR and supervisors who have to work with staff.
This course is also suitable for other people-helping professions who are interested to become effective people helpers to help people to enhance their interpersonal skills as well as those who take up the course to help themselves manage their own interpersonal and people-relationship issues.
Day 1: 9am-5pm (In-Person Classroom)
Day 2: 9am-5pm (In-Person Classroom)
Day 3: 9am-5.15pm (In-Person Classroom + Written Assessment)
Day 4: 20 Min Role Play via ZOOM
Course Objectives
You will learn how to use the Satir model and techniques to help your clients or yourself (self-help) to enhance interpersonal skills in order to strengthen relationship with others such as family members, colleagues, superiors, stakeholders and friends, etc. At the end of this course, the learner will be able to:
Examine Satir model’s therapeutic beliefs
Apply Iceberg Model as a communication tool for better interaction with family members and others
Apply the Congruence Interaction skills to improve interaction with family members and others
Who Should Attend
Social workers, psychologists, counsellors, para-counsellors, volunteers, community workers, people-helpers, HR and supervisory roles, and workers in any industry.
Award
Trainees who meet 75% class attendance and achieve “Competent” for all assessments will be issued 2 certificates: A Statement of Attainment (SOA) awarded by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) and a Certificate of Achievement with the course title in it from the Academy of Human Development.
Your Trainer
Ms Abby Chew
Ms Abby Chew Geok Bee is currently a Senior Counsellor with Fei Yue Community Services. Her social service experiences spanned across various groups of communities - families from Family Service Centre settings, couples with marital and parenting issues, couples and children who are going through divorce. She provides psychoeducation, group-work, casework and counseling services to these clienteles. Abby is also trained in Satir’s Transformational Systemic Therapy, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).
She also specialized in conducting life-skills training, group-work and family reintegration at Singapore Prison Service for inmates and their families. She provided social and counseling support to inmates dealing with addiction and offending issues. Abby also volunteered in providing training and counseling support for ex-women drug-offenders.
Abby is passionate about training and development to impact and transform lives. Through the Early Marriage Support Programme, Abby prepared minors for marriage. Abby is an adjunct trainer for the WSQ-Practical Counseling course with the Academy of Human Development. She also conducts workshops in National Silver Academic helping seniors managing major life transitions. Her wide training and counselling experience covers addiction, mental health issues, grief and loss, marital and family issues.
Prior to joining Fei Yue Community Services, Abby helped organizations with their developmental needs - facilitating organization change, organization learning, leadership development and coaching. She is trained in Leadership Development Programme by Centre for Creative Leadership (USA) and Learning Organization: Developing Leaders for Learning. She holds a Master of Social Science (Counseling) from Edith Cowen University, Australia. Abby is a Registered Counselor with the Singapore Association for Counseling (SAC) and a Registered Social Service Practitioner (RSSP) with Singapore Association of Social Workers.
