About the Course

Please note that AHD has revamped "Practical Counselling (Intermediate)" and its new title is now "Microskills and Techniques for Effective Paracounselling".


This course aims to equip you with advanced skills to promote change and growth in peoples’ lives. It focuses on equipping you with skills essential for providing meaningful support to individuals navigating difficulties, stress and mental health challenges.


Through immersive role plays and targeted practices, this course is designed to hone your abilities, ensuring you gain both theoretical understanding and practical proficiency in using the tried and tested counselling models, strategies and techniques covered in the course.


Pre-requisite: Learners must have completed WSQ-Practical Counselling Basic from AHD or equivalent from other training providers, or have at least 1 year of para-counselling experience.


Day 1: 9am-5pm (In-Person Classroom)

Day 2: 9am-5pm (In-Person Classroom)

Day 3: 9am-5.30pm (In-Person Classroom + Written Assessment)

Day 4: 20 Min Role Play via ZOOM

Course Objectives

At the end of this module, the learner will be able to:


  • Apply a counselling process to draw out the strengths, positives and power in the counselees to help them to cope/overcome their difficulties and promote change and growth.

  • Apply counselling models and theories to develop practical and effective probing and counselling skills.

  • Apply counselling techniques and skills to motivate positive change in client’s thoughts and actions.


The main focus of the course is to apply counselling techniques and skills throughout an effective 5-step counselling process.

Who Should Attend

The course is targeted at social workers, para-counsellors, HR professionals, supervisory roles, teachers, health care workers, workers in police force, and volunteers etc.

Award

Trainees who meet 75% class attendance and achieve “Competent” for all assessments will be issued 2 certificates: A Statement of Attainment (SOA) awarded by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) and a Certificate of Achievement with the course title in it from the Academy of Human Development.

Mrs Chan Swee Fen

Mrs Chan Swee Fen has more than 18 years of training experience; imparting knowledge and expertise in the area of parenting, marriage, personal effectiveness, group dynamics/facilitation and counselling. Her participants include staff from hospitals, churches, private and public educational institutions, corporate organisations and government agencies/statutory boards. She holds a Master’s degree in Counseling and Psychotherapy and before that, she had completed a Social Work degree from NUS. She is a very experienced and enthusiastic trainer who knows how to balance teaching and fun in the conduct of her training.
