About the Course
Developing safer trauma informed practice offers a guide towards the goal of trauma recovery for the individuals you seek to assist. To achieve this, therapists, need also to ensure that they have a personal level of stablization, health and resources to remain safe and regulated. As Babette said “There should always be one person during therapy regulated at all times!” And you guessed it… it is you!
This two days workshop, which is based on the work of Babette Rothschild will explore the theory of trauma, and tackle critical and key issues in recovering from trauma.
The theory, tools and techniques presented in this workshop are easily integrated across the widest range of treatment modalities including CBT, EMDR, SE and more.
Course Outline
Learn body-oriented interventions for increasing stability and improving quality of life.
Be able to assess and distinguish clients who will benefit from processing trauma memories from those who will not
Learn skills to support all clients
Develop their ability to interpret and modulate the body’s nervous system (sensory and autonomic) with a view to supporting themselves and their clients to regulate arousal levels
Explore how to adapt interventions e.g. mindfulness to support clients with PTSD
Learn how to reduce and stop flashbacks and support clients in constructively managing nightmaresLearn about and gain tools to protect themselves from vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue.
Course Objectives
Specifically this workshop will:
Provide participants with an opportunity to expand their knowledge and understanding in relation to trauma.
Explore and stress the importance of ensuring that stability is maintained as a core foundation when working with clients who have suffered trauma.
Help clinicians determine if it is relevant and safe to proceed with processing memory in order to support recovery from trauma
Who Should Attend
This training is ideal for helping professionals and emergency workers who provide front line services to support people who have experienced trauma. This includes counsellors, social workers, psychotherapists, counselling and psychotherapy students, individuals working in caring professions e.g pastoral workers.
Award
Participants who meet 75% class attendance will be awarded a Certificate of Accomplishment by the Academy of Human Development.

Ms Patricia Bourke D'Souza
Patricia Bourke D’Souza is an accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist (MIACP, MIAHIP) since 2001 and an accredited Supervisor (MIACP) and Certified Somatic Trauma Therapist, Trainer and Supervisor (Babette Rothschild). Patricia has assisted Babette Rothschild on her training tours of Australia, New Zealand and Singapore and co-trained on her tours of Australia in 2016-2017.
