About the Course

Attachment theory offers a framework for conceptualizing and treating a wide range of problems because many interpersonal problems and mood disorders are related to early attachment experiences. How the therapist can facilitate a corrective attachment experience is the key interest that sets the stage of this training. 

This workshop explores how the earlier attachment experiences with a primary caregiver affect an individual’s development into adulthood. In particular, it explores how suboptimal attachment experience can lead to difficulties in interpersonal relationships and psychopathology, such as depression, anxiety, maladaptive anger.


The second part of the workshop explores how psychotherapy can address and mitigate the detrimental effects of early attachment experiences. Therapists of various theoretical orientations will benefit from this workshop because it will help them understand the origins of common presenting problems in therapy, as well as offer an approach for addressing these problems in therapy.


Course Objectives

On completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Construct an attachment-based view of development

  • Understand the different components in attachment-based psychotherapy

  • Develop attachment-based psychotherapy skills

Who Should Attend

This course is appropriate for social workers, welfare workers, counsellors, therapists and psychologists.

Basic knowledge of Attachment Theory is preferred.

Award

Participants who meet 75% class attendance will be awarded a Certificate of Accomplishment by the Academy of Human Development.

Dr Guo Lih Jia

Dr Guo Lih Jia

Dr. Guo Lih Jia has been involved in counseling, supervision and training for more than 10 years with the intention of equipping people helpers in supporting individuals to improve their quality of life. She has worked in the family service center and counseling center in Singapore and is familiar with the common challenges people helpers face in their quest to support those in need.

Lih Jia is an experienced trainer conducting training in different settings to develop knowledge and skills of practitioners from communities in the local and over the globe. She has involved in lecturing in academic programs, such as Diploma in Counseling, Diploma in Family Life Education, Bachelor in Counselling, and Bachelor in Social Work, to name a few.

Academically, Lih Jia holds a Doctor of Psychology (USA), Master of Social Science in Counseling (AU), Master of Science in Mathematics (USA) and Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Mathematics & Computer Science (CA).

Professionally, Lih Jia was formerly working in the IT industry as a system architect and project manager. These experiences helped her to develop a sharp analytical mind. After changing her career into the helping profession, Lih Jia has been actively involved in face-to-face counseling, individual and group supervision and conducting training in academic settings and continual education for existing practitioners. Her analytical mind enabled her to deconstruct complex concepts into easy-to-understand knowledge blocks; Lih Jia is well-known for her ability to help learners integrate building blocks of knowledge and translate them into practical life skills.

Today, Lih Jia is focusing on clinical supervision and counseling-related training. She is passionate in equipping individuals to use self as a tool to facilitate healing. Because of the fervent enthusiasm, she is well known for reflective and inward-looking and experiential training sessions.
