Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (Groupwork)


Solution-Focused Brief Therapy is a comprehensive model, which encompasses a way of constantly considering how people change and achieve their goals; and a way of conversing with people and constructing solutions interactively. It has been widely used not only in the healthcare settings, but also education, management and coaching.

Course Objectives

The course aims to equip social workers, counsellors, psychologists and people in the helping professions with the knowledge and skills of SFBT, and to use the therapy effectively to help clients and people in need. The approach also works with clients who face extreme difficulties in their lives and relationships.

Who Should Attend

This course is suitable for practitioners in the social service field who are working with individuals, families, groups and/or communities. It will be relevant to those working with children, youth and/or adults. It is appropriate for social workers, welfare workers, counsellors, therapists, psychologists, teachers and anyone else who are interested in helping people.


Participants who meet 80% class attendance will be awarded a Certificate of Accomplishment by the Academy of Human Development.

Dr Svea Van Der Hoorn has more than 30 years of experience in SF brief practice - both as a therapist and as a coach. Trained as a psychologist, she has been engaged as a consultant, trainer, coach and supervisor delivering services using the SolutionFocused Brief Approach (SFBA) that she has developed to participants from the education, welfare, health, NGO, community-based, and corporate sectors. She is an experienced clinical supervisor for individuals and groups, and also is an International Coach Federation mentor coach and assessor - Professional Certified Coach (ICF-PCC). Besides, she is a trainer for two ACTP SF Coaching programmes. She serves on the European Brief Therapy Association working group for SFBT Theory and the SF Research Committee, and is also on the editorial board for the Journal of the Australasian Association of SFBT.
