Attachment-Based Psychotherapy

INTRODUCTION

Attachment theory offers a framework for conceptualizing and treating a wide range of problems because many interpersonal problems and mood disorders are related to early attachment experiences. How the therapist can facilitate a corrective attachment experience is the key interest that sets the stage of this training. This workshop explores how the earlier attachment experiences with a primary caregiver affect an individual’s development into adulthood. In particular, it explores how suboptimal attachment experience can lead to difficulties in interpersonal relationships and psychopathology, such as depression, anxiety, maladaptive anger. The second part of the workshop explores how psychotherapy can address and mitigate the detrimental effects of early attachment experiences.Therapists of various theoretical orientations will benefit from this workshop because it will help them understand the origins of common presenting problems in therapy, as well as offer an approach for addressing these problems in therapy.
