Connecting with Children and Adolescents through Gestalt Play Therapy

INTRODUCTION

In this workshop, you will be introduced to the principles and clinical skills of Gestalt Play Therapy first established by Violet Oaklander, author of Windows to Our Children: A Gestalt Approach to Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy (1989) and Hidden Treasure: A Map to the Child's Inner Self (2007). Grounded on the Gestalt approach, Gestalt Play Therapy emphasizes the importance of connection and relationship with our children or adolescents to support them to empowered choices and responses to their challenges. 

Conducted online, you will explore the use of play to build therapeutic connection with children and adolescents through experiential activities and small group discussions.  

COURSE OBJECTIVES 

At the end of the training, you will:be able to:

· Understand the therapeutic functions of play

· Gain an overview of the therapeutic process developed by Violet Oaklander

· Learn how to use play to engage and build relationship with children and adolescents

  • Understanding the therapeutic powers of play

  • Understanding children's symbolic play
  • Interpersonal neurobiology of play

  • Introduction to Gestalt Play Therapy
  • Engaging and building relationship through play 

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This training is suitable for following groups of people:

  • Individuals interested to learn more about use of play in therapy and mental health setting

  • Individuals considered taking up professional training in Play Therapy
  • Professionals currently working with children e.g. social workers, counsellors, occupational/speech therapists, mental health workers, residential workers etc.

No previous experience of Play Therapy is necessary but a willingness and enthusiasm for play is very much welcomed.

TRAINER

Lee Sock Kuan has been working with children, couples and familites for over 13 years and is a certified Gestalt Therapist with Children and Adolescents with West Coast Institute. As the first to receive her certification in AsiaPacific region, Sock Kuan is excited to further her work with children and their families on coping with stress, attachment, challenging behaviour and loss issues in the Gestalt approach. Besides, Gestalt Therapy, she has received specialised training in Play Therapy, Sandplay Therapy, art facilitation, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Family Therapy and Emotional Focused Therapy. Sock Kuan also supervises and trains therapists, psychologists and social workers. She is a registered Clinical Member and Clinical Supervisor of the Singapore Association for Counselling. Besides being certified with West Coast Institute, she is a also a Certified Practitioner in Therapeutic Play Skills with Play Therapy International (UK).
