Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) is a form of creative arts therapy that supports the process of integration within a person in respect of their cognitive, emotional and physical health.
Using movements, observations and psychotherapeutic skills, the dance therapist supports participants to express, associate and find meanings for their personal growth or working towards change.
Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) is widely practiced across sectors such as education, social services and mental health.
This two day introductory course will focus primarily on our work with children and adolescents.
Four main areas in this workshop are:
(1) Overview of DMT
(2) Experiencing movement with theory
(3) Understanding DMT in a clinical/ therapeutic setting
(4) Applications of DMT on working with children and adolescents
COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course will help participants:
COURSE CONTENT
i) Movement Explorations
Participants will learn basic movement theory such as Laban effort theory through movement explorations.
(ii) Childhood developmental stages
We will learn about childhood stage of development from birth to walking to support our personal integration and to develop our observation skills in children.
(iii) Experiential DMT Session
Participants will participate in an 'as if' group DMT and reflect on their experiences after moving together.
(iv) DMT in Clinical Settings and Its Ethnics
Participants will look at key concepts from psychodynamic theory and to read about research studies and best practices in DMT with children and adolescents. Participants will discuss relevant case studies including children with special needs.
(v) Designing a Basic Intervention for Children Using DMT
Participants will design a basic intervention for children based on the movement theory and techniques learnt. Participants can bring back valuable knowledge to extend their scope in engaging children in a creative manner.
MODE OF DELIVERY
Lectures, small group discussions, experiential activities using body and movement.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Nursery and pre-school teachers, primary school teachers, school-based counsellors, social workers and social work assistants who work with children and families.
AWARD
Participants who meet 80% class attendance will be awarded a Certificate of Accomplishment by the Academy of Human Development.

TRAINER
Ms. Agnes Law is a registered Dance Movement Psychotherapist and a supervisor with the Association of Dance Movement Psychotherapy in the United Kingdom. Agnes is currently an Associate Lecturer in Dance Movement Psychotherapy at Goldsmiths, University of London. She has extensive experience in providing therapeutic/DMT programme for children, young people and their families both in Singapore and in the UK. She also offers clinical supervision and training to a wide audience such as social workers, therapists, counsellors, trainees, pastoral staff and educators using DMT and creative approaches.
