Narrative Responses to Grief and Working in Palliative Care

Dulwich Centre is an independent centre in Adelaide, Australia. So much has occurred since Dulwich Centre first opened her doors in 1983! Throughout these developments Dulwich Centre has been, and continues to be, a place of narrative therapy, community work, training, publishing, conferences and conversation!

Dulwich Centre has an international network of narrative practitioners and has members from USA, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand and many other countries around the world. Narrative approaches to social service delivery centre people as the experts in their own lives and view problems as separate from people. Narrative approaches assume that people have many skills, competencies, beliefs, values, commitments and abilities that will assist them to reduce the influence of problems in their lives.

This course will be specifically designed to be relevant to social service workers and to assist them to be able to use narrative practices in their work contexts.

Upon completion of the course, the graduate is recognized and certified as a Narrative Therapist by Dulwich Centre.
 Course Objectives


This 2-day workshop will provide practitioners with improved skills in responding to those experiencing grief and to those who are dying.

It is a structured course that teaches a collective of narrative therapy techniques. It opens up a wide array of possibilities and ideas for social service professionals to explore and experience new ways and practices to their work.

 Course Contents


The following will be covered in this 2-day workshop:

  • Theoretical introduction to narrative responses in grief
  • Practise re-membering converstions to enable participants to develop their skills in this area
  • Introduction to narrative responses to working with those who are dying
  • Provide a narrative framework for participants to work with those who are dying
  • Conversations of legacy, documentation and definitional ceremonies
  • To enable participants to develop their narrative skills in working with those who are dying

 

 Who Should Attend
Practitioners in the social service field who are working with individuals, families, groups and/or communities. It will be appropriate for social workers, welfare workers, counsellors, therapists, psychologists, and anyone else who is interested in working with those who experiencing grief or in palliative care.

 Award

Participants who successfully complete any of the stand-alone modules will be awarded a Certificate of Completion by Dulwich Centre, Australia.

Participants who successfully complete Introduction to Narrative Therapy, any other 5 stand-alone modules, and the required assessement, will be awarded a Graduate Certificate in Narrative Therapy by Dulwich Centre. They will be recognized by Dulwich Centre as Narrative Therapists.
 
 Trainer(s)


Lorraine Hedtke MSW, LCSW, PhD, one of the world's leading exponents of narrative re-membering practices.

She is professor at California State University San Bernardino, where she teaches school counselling and coordinates the programme in Counselling and Guidance. Lorraine's career has blended clinical practice and educational endeavor.

She writes, researches, and teaches about social constructionist practices in conversations with the dying and the bereaved. She regularly teaches about death, dying, bereavement, and narrative therapy throughout the United States and internationally. Her articles have appeared in numerous professional and trade publications and newspapers.

Along with John Winslade, she is the co-author of "Re-membering Lives: Converstions With The Dying anf The Bereaved". Her children's book, "My Grandmother Is Always With Me", is co-authored with her daughter, Addison.
